The Looming Catastrophe in Taiz: Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights Sounds the Alarm Over Imminent Humanitarian Collapse

The Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights has issued an urgent and severe warning regarding the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the city of Taiz, attributing the unfolding crisis to the suffocating siege imposed by the Houthi militia backed by the Iranian regime.

According to an official statement, the relentless blockade and the deliberate cutoff of vital supplies to local residents have brought the city to the brink of a catastrophic humanitarian breakdown, threatening the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians and creating severe shortages of food, medical supplies, and fuel.

The ministry documented that the militia’s continuous attacks on Taiz and its surrounding areas have resulted in the death and injury of more than 250 civilians, targeted through indiscriminate shelling of residential neighborhoods, sniper fire targeting civilians, and direct attacks on ambulances, thereby obstructing rescue operations and emergency medical care.

Particular alarm was raised over the critical drinking water crisis gripping the city over recent weeks, caused by the militia’s systematic blocking of water supplies originating from the Al-Dhabab basin, alongside persistent shelling targeting transport routes and endangering the lives of water transport workers.

Furthermore, the health sector faces an immediate threat of total shutdown as hospitals run out of medicines, medical disposables, and generator fuel, jeopardizing emergency rooms, intensive care units, surgeries, dialysis centers, and pediatric incubators, thereby exposing patients, wounded individuals, and pregnant women to direct mortal peril.

Concluding its statement, the ministry held the Houthi militia fully responsible for the civilian casualties and the unfolding humanitarian disaster, while urgently calling upon the United Nations, the international community, and humanitarian organizations to exert effective pressure to lift the siege, open supply routes, and ensure the unhindered flow of water, food, and medicine into the beleaguered city.
