MT Eureka Hijacking Update

The Yemen Coast Guard has confirmed that the oil tanker “MT Eureka,” hijacked a day ago off the coast of Yemen, has continued its course toward the northeastern shores of Somalia.

Latest geospatial data indicates that the vessel, carrying approximately 2,800 tons of diesel, is on the verge of entering Somali territorial waters while remaining under the full control of armed elements.

Information gathered from open-source intelligence units shows that the tanker’s last known position near the Yemeni coast was approximately 20 kilometers off Shabwah province on Saturday morning.

Since then, the vessel has been forcibly redirected more than 132 kilometers toward the Horn of Africa, currently positioned roughly 160 kilometers from the Somali city of Bosaso.

Field reports identify the hijackers as a group of nine Somali gunmen equipped with various weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).

This heavy armament, combined with operational limitations, hindered the Yemen Coast Guard’s initial interception efforts, allowing the captors to move the vessel beyond the immediate reach of Yemeni security patrols.

Maritime security experts are closely monitoring the situation as the tanker enters a high-risk sector known for piracy activities.

The international community remains on high alert regarding the safety of the crew and the potential for environmental or security escalation should the vessel reach militant-controlled areas along the Somali coastline.
